Harrison Butker’s controversial commencement address contained a significant error.
Harrison Butker, Kansas City Chiefs kicker, criticized LGBTQ rights, diversity initiatives, and President Joe Biden in a speech at a small Catholic college in Kansas.
Additionally, he mentioned women and Taylor Swift fans, which sparked a heated response from them.Backlash has been brewing ever since Harrison Butker made his comments on Saturday during his speech to graduates at Benedictine College, a small Catholic school in Atchison, Kansas. The NFL released a statement on Wednesday, stating that his views do not reflect theirs. Senior Vice President Jonathan Beane spoke out, saying, “Harrison Butker delivered his speech in his personal capacity. His views do not represent the NFL’s organization. The NFL is strongly committed to inclusivity, which makes our league stronger.” GLAAD also weighed in, calling his speech “a major miss” and “incompatible with how Americans view Pride, LGBTQ individuals, and women”.
Addressing the 485 male and female graduates, Butker stated that a woman’s achievements in the home are more valuable than any academic or professional accomplishments.
“I would like to address you, women, directly, for I believe you have been subjected to the most malicious lies,” he said. “I know that many of you are about to receive your diplomas and are eager to pursue promotions and titles in your careers. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers, but I predict that the majority of you are more excited about your marriage and the children you will have.”
