The Prince and Princess of Wales be the future of the monarchy – but just like the rest of us, they experienced an embarrassingly awkward first date.

Kate and William went from being just friends to something more while studying at St Andrews University in the early 2000s. The pair lived in the same dorms in the first year and moved into the same shared house in the second year, before sparks began to fly between them.

Kate has previously recalled how the first time she ever met William she went “bright red”, saying: “I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy.” Similarly William has told how he knew there was something ‘special’ about Kate from the early days. Speaking years after they met, he claimed: “When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her. I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there.”

He tried to impress his future wife by cooking ‘fancy’ dinners in their shared house. “I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners,” William told Press Association of meals in their student digs. “[But] what would happen was I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire. She would be sitting in the background trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation.”

And when it finally came time for their first official date, Kate reportedly tried to play a little joke on William, which ended in disaster. Heart Radio reports how Kate attempted to curtsy to William as a joke, but she ended up falling over and making William spill a drink all over himself.

But despite the awkward first date blunders, the pair continued their romance. William proposed to Kate in 2010 and she’s since perfected the art of royal etiquette as the nation’s future Queen. During her official engagement interview, she told Tom Bradby she was “willing to learn quickly and work hard” when it came to royal life, to which William agreed “she’ll do really well”.

The couple famously tied the knot in 2011 in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey and have since welcomed three beautiful children together, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Their relationship seems to have only gone from strength to strength, especially since becoming Prince and Princess of Wales when King Charles ascended to the throne.

And speaking of their fairy-tale romance, which has seen the couple joined at the hip, a palace source told Us weekly: “William and Kate are more in sync than ever. They cherish what they have with each other. For them, family comes first, and it always will.”

And the couple, especially William, don’t shy away from PDA despite the rather private beginnings. The source continued: “William used to be quite awkward about showing too much affection, but Kate’s helped him relax. They’re in awe of each other. William tells anyone who will listen that he couldn’t do it without Kate, and she echoes that right back.”
